5 Signs Your Windows Are Costing You Money Every Month

April 8, 2024 · Ballistic Window and Door

Old or inefficient windows don't just fail in a storm — they drain your wallet every single month. Here's how to know if yours are the problem.

Your Windows Might Be Your Biggest Energy Leak

In Florida, cooling your home accounts for the majority of your electric bill. Most homeowners blame the AC unit — but in many cases, the real problem is what the air is escaping through: old, inefficient windows.

Here are five signs your windows are costing you more than they should.

Sign 1: Your Electric Bill Spikes Every Summer

If your cooling costs feel unreasonably high and your AC seems to run constantly, your windows may be the culprit. Single-pane and older double-pane windows provide minimal insulation against Florida's heat. Solar heat gain through the glass raises your interior temperature, forcing your AC to work harder.

Impact windows with low-E glass coatings reflect solar heat and dramatically reduce heat transfer. Homeowners who upgrade frequently report $100–$200 per month in cooling savings — sometimes more in larger homes.

What to look for: Hold your hand near the window glass on a sunny afternoon. If it feels noticeably warm, solar heat is entering your home.

Sign 2: Drafts, Even When Everything Is Closed

Feel a draft near a window that's fully closed? That's conditioned air leaving your home and unconditioned air entering. This is both an energy issue and a comfort issue — and it often gets worse when the wind picks up.

Drafts typically come from:

  • Failed weatherstripping around the sash
  • Cracked or dried-out caulking around the frame
  • Warped frames that no longer seal properly
  • Glass that has separated from the frame

Some of these can be repaired. But in older windows, they're often symptoms of a window that's simply at the end of its useful life.

What to look for: Light a stick of incense or a match near window edges on a windy day. If the smoke moves sideways, you have a draft.

Sign 3: Condensation or Fogging Between the Panes

If you have double-pane windows and you notice fogging or condensation between the two panes of glass, the seal has failed. The insulating gas (usually argon) has escaped, and your window is now performing barely better than a single-pane.

This is not a repairable problem. The entire glass unit needs to be replaced — and if one window in a set has failed, others are typically close behind.

Sign 4: Excessive Outside Noise

Sound travels through air — which means windows that leak air also let in more noise. If you notice significant outside noise (traffic, neighbors, wind) coming through closed windows, it's a sign that the acoustic seal has broken down.

Impact windows, by their nature, are also excellent sound barriers. The laminated glass and tight frame seals reduce outside noise by 30–40% compared to standard windows. Many homeowners report this as one of the most immediately noticeable improvements after upgrading.

Sign 5: Your Home Has Hard Water Stains, Rust Streaks, or Visible Frame Damage

In Florida's humid, salt-air environment, window frames take a beating. If you're seeing:

  • White mineral deposits on the glass that won't clean off
  • Rust streaks running down aluminum frames
  • Rotting or swollen wood around the frame
  • Paint peeling or bubbling near windows

...these are signs that moisture is getting in. And where moisture gets in, so does air — and eventually, so does hurricane-force wind.
